Bacon Kindergarten Curriculum
Language Arts
* Treasures*
In 2010 PSD adopted the Treasures Reading Program. It is a research-based program that incorporates reading, sound spelling, and vocabulary. This program supports the district’s philosophy of a balanced literature framework which includes interactive and shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading. The Treasures curriculum differentiates instruction to meet the needs of each learner. Students have the opportunity to work in both large and small groups throughout the week. Students will be exposed to many pieces of literature. One of the highlights of this program is that reading and vocabulary will be related to a specific theme and connections will be made easily.
* Daily 5*
A portion of our literacy time each day will be focused on the Daily 5. During Daily 5 students complete meaningful literacy tasks including: Read to Self, Work on Writing, Word Work, Listen to Reading, and Read to Someone.
* Writing*
With guidance and support kindergarteners will use drawings, dictating, and writing to compose opinion, informative, and narrative writing pieces.
Math
Everyday Math contains an excellent mix of hands-on learning through exploration, skill practice, fun games, new concepts introduced and spiraled throughout the year, and specific learning goals. The daily math lesson consists of warm up drills, direct instruction and exploration, and time to work on the new skill. An integral part of the curriculum is learning number sense through games and hands-on activities.
Social Studies
In 2013 PSD has adopted TCI: Social Studies Alive, a new social studies resource. The focus in kindergarten is on family, communities, and social skills.
Science
We will be studying three main science units this year: trees, paper and wood, and animals two by two. Each of these units comes with a fantastic kit of hands-on activities that make science fun and engaging.
